  What’s News
The latest happenings in and around the chapter...

By John Crane
Housing Corporation Secretary

It’s been a long time. The last newsletter I have on record was from 2003! This issue will be short, we want to relay some dates and some recent happenings as well as put the word out for some potential volunteers.

Alumni Board will be splitting up
National has recommended that we split the Alumni Board into two governing bodies. Per their recommendation, the two groups are the Housing Corporation (or Association) and the Chapter Council. The Housing Corporation will be involved with Alumni finance and legal contracts. The Chapter Council will be an advisory committee working directly with the undergrads. If you would like a list of roles and responsibilities, please email me at housingcorpsecretary@iitalphasigs.org.

All chapter debt has been paid off
As of October 22nd, 2007, all mortgage debt to IIT has been paid off. Approximately $180,000 of debt in the form of a 20 year mortgage was taken out between 1992 and 1994. After years of non-payment due to a number of issues on both sides, IIT decided the loan was in default and gave the chapter one year to fix the situation. Luckily, the Alumni Board was in control of more funds than what was owed to the school and the entire balance, which was close to $157,000, was paid off. What was even more lucky was that this did not put the chapter into a position without a financial buffer, we are still in control of over $60,000 and expect to collect full rent payments from the undergraduates this year.

We could use some help
Volunteers are needed!

Looking to do your part? Whether you have only a little time to spare, or are looking to get heavily involved, there is plenty of work that needs to be done. Here are some examples...

Run for office
There will be a number of positions opening up due to the change in the alumni board structure. If you would like to be part of the Chapter Council, you could run for Grand Chapter Advisor, or maybe one of the Financial, Ritual, Brotherhood, Scholarship, Rush or Risk Management advisors. Or if you’d like to be part of the Housing Corporation, you could run for president, treasurer, secretary or as one of the members-at-large.

Write an article for the newsletter
Have an experience to share? Do you have something to buy/sell? Is your company hiring? Maybe you want to find a brother you haven’t spoken to in ages? Write an article for the newsletter!

  Help find lost alumni
The alumni database is always out of date, with 950 brothers initiated, you can always guarantee that someone has moved, changed jobs or got a new phone number or email address. If you have any contacts, even if you think we might have them please send them over to housingcorpsecretary@iitalphasigs.org.

Stop by the house
Stopping by is a wonderful way to bring some positive change to the house. Sit in on a chapter meeting, stop by for dinner, play some pool on the revamped pool table or just do a walkthrough to remember what living in the house was like! While you are there, share stories of what brotherhood was like in your day, advise them on ways of fixing things up on the cheap, or point out things that aren’t kept up and help them make it better. When the alumni aren’t present, it makes it easy to forget that we are part of an organization with a 162 year history! Besides, if we don’t do our part, can we really expect the undergraduates to do the same when they graduate? Of course not.
